It is evident that ever since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the month of January, life has not been the same. What at first seemed like a SARS-like respiratory illness in the wet market of Wuhan, China in no time affected around 213 nations and territories till now. While those working in the medical field and scientists across the world are working day and night to contain the spread of the virus, the pandemic has also resulted in severe mental health emergencies across the world. Several people have resorted to counselling approaches to drive away anxiety and negativity.

As the confusion and chaos over the pandemic hit the headlines, social media, our inbox, and the conversations we make with our near and dear ones, anxiety has become quite common in people’s lives. Stress and anxiety have hit the teaching profession also. There are many Counselling courses for Teachers in Singapore where teachers can learn to let go of this anxiety that does no good to human life.

It is very important to take a step back and understand how we can let go of this anxiety and stop stressing about things that are beyond our control. The concept of “locus of control” has been there for centuries. It is just a series of control activities to keep the stress in our lives in check.

It will be beneficial for everyone from students, teachers to family members to stop worrying about the difference between the things you can control vs. the things you cannot. This thought often pushes us and helps us to break the cycle of catastrophizing a situation.

Now, you might want to know how things work

1.  Learn to let go of what is beyond control with the Circle of Control

When we start worrying too much about something, it is never productive and leads us to create extreme situations the outcomes of which are never fruitful. Therefore, overthinking and taking stress will lead us to nowhere and there are high chances that our worst fears will never come true. So why we must waste thinking about them? It only fills our minds with anxiety.

For instance, we can’t control the hoarding of toilet paper or what’s being shown on the news, or even the duration of the pandemic. What we can control is our actions and we should instead work on it.

2. Focus on what is within your control with the Circle of Control

Stop worrying about that toilet paper and instead focus on other ways to take care of your hygiene that you have control over.

Instead of contemplating over the latest fear-packed breaking news, switch off the TV or stay away from social media. You can control your decisions and start meditating instead of thinking over the news. You can even choose to spend time with your family by playing board games with them.

3. How to Cope with Alarmists

There is no second thought that we are living in a difficult time where we cannot take control of how others feel or will react to a situation but what we can do is take control over our thoughts. In a way, keeping away alarmists, messengers of bad news, and conspiracy theorists will help us to exist peacefully amongst so much fear and chaos.

4. Help Children reduce anxiety during the Pandemic

Guide and show youngsters’ ways to remain reasonable and help them understand what is and what is not under their control during times of uncertainty. You can, for example, tell them they have control over their actions by asking them to follow the CDC guidelines. You can advise children to stay away from social media and enjoy the present moment by playing a board game or going for a walk.

One has to stop predicting the future that can lead to anxiety and create an emergency. When a child is surrounded by negative news and social media, it can only have an adverse effect and impact the way they develop their innate responses to negativity.

So it is extremely important to educate children about things they can control, and some things that are beyond their control. Teach them to let go of anxiety before it becomes overwhelming. There are several online Counselling courses for Teachers that they can enrol in to learn various ways to drive away negativity and anxiety from their life
