The idea of being a “warm demander” is being considered as a perfect approach for educators to follow as they include more impartial practices in education. Showing warmth and being rigid simultaneously is quite a challenge for any teacher and even more during a pandemic.

But, is it practically possible, especially during a pandemic to become a warm demander and understand the need to reconsider what exactly they’re demanding. Being a warm demander during these times can be different, and educators must take a look and analyze what that means for their students. Administrators must also consider this with warmth and show the way.

First, one must start acknowledging and accepting that it is fine to relax while being a demander until they can portray their warm side more effectively and understand our learners better in this new world. It’s crucial that administrators and other leaders support this improvement, not just call for it. They can do this through the following ways:
 

  • Acknowledge the amendment.
  • Balancing their warmth and demandingness
  • Ensuring that no teachers will be punished for reducing their standards of teaching or not completing their curriculum
  • Leading and allowing discussions to motivate teacher, student, and family voices regarding what this is and relaying these changes to families
  • Dedicating time for professional development on scaffolding and community building
  • Providing more time for teachers to reach the families and adjust the scope, sequence, and pacing of curriculum, and instil community building into their classes
  • Changes to the master schedule to create a place for academic interventions and social and emotional programming (such as a resource period or advisory/homeroom).

Thus, by introducing and supporting warm demander interactions, we will create a new way of learning together. We can visualize the almost impossible—a learning environment where every student and teacher is encouraged to reach their expectations in a loving and caring manner—and then sanction it. And suddenly, small conversation will be viewed in the image of the school we want to create.
